Data Sources

  1. United States Census Bureau, "County Business Patterns."
This data set provides county-level information on employment, payroll, and establishments across NAICS industries in the United States. This is an annual series and is built with census information and administrative records. Information for 2002 is currently available (March 2004), and 2003 is expected summer 2005.
  2. Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Current Employment Statistics."s
The Current Employment Statistics data set provides monthly information on employment, average wages, and average numbers of hours worked per week. It is constructed monthly through surveys of payroll records from nearly 400,000 businesses nationally. This information provides good month-to-month information on employment, but does not use NAICS categories at the state or metropolitan level.
  3. North Carolina Employment Security Commission, "Employment and Wages by Industry."
The Employment and Wages by Industry data set provides employment, average wages, and the number of establishments by county for NAICS industry categories beginning in 1990. This is the primary source of data used in this site, and it provides both annual and quarterly data.
