Duke VPN Client

When remotely accessing a resource that should be protected from public access, use of a VPN (Virtual Private Network) client may be required. A VPN client ensures secure data transmission over public networks from your PC [in any location] to a Duke VPN subnet. The VPN works by securely tunneling you into the Duke network and effectively gives you a Duke IP address. Network traffic is routed within Duke from the VPN subnet to the desired resource.

Use of a VPN client is one means by which users of the Sociology domain can remotely access their home directories with Windows and Mac PCs.

VPN clients are specific to operating system and are distributed as download packages by OIT. The authoritative link is found at Virtual Private Network FAQ. Follow the instructions for installation of the VPN client and make sure the VPN security certificate has been imported into the client.

Installing the VPN client can be problematic. For example, a client is not available for 64-bit versions of Windows XP or Vista. If you already have a VPN client installed from another institution, this can complicate matters. Speak with an IT staff member or call the OIT Help Desk (684-2200) if you have installation difficulties.

Load the VPN client only when you specifically need it.

Web-Based VPN Client

Duke is beginning to test an alternate set of VPN clients that uses web-based installation and loading methods.
