Remote Mapping of Your Home Directory

Proper use of this technique provides Duke Sociology affiliates the ability to remotely map their network home directory from anywhere on the Internet.

These instructions presume you have a Sociology Domain account, a valid Duke NetID and installation of the ["Duke AnyConnect VPN Client"] appropriate for your PC. You must preload the VPN client on home desktops and on laptops using any wireless connection, whether on or off campus.

The steps below describe how to map your network home directory to a Windows XP or a Mac OS X system.

Mapping Under Windows XP

[Similar steps work for mapping a Windows Vista or Windows 7 PC.]

  1. Connect the VPN client, authenticating with your NetID and password.
  2. Right-click on My Computer and select the Explore option.

  3. Select Tools, then Map Network Drive...

  4. In the resulting dialog box, specify an available drive letter.
  5. Specify the folder path to your network directory as follows:
  6. \\utopia3.soc.duke.edu\homes\lanhome

  7. Reconnect at logon should be unchecked.

  8. Click Finish.

  9. If prompted, enter your Domain account userid and password.
  10. A drive letter is added which maps to your lanhome directory.

Mapping Under Mac OS X

  1. Connect the VPN client, authenticating with your NetID and password.
  2. Select Finder, then the Go menu, and the Connect to server option.

  3. Enter in the Server Address field:

  4. smb://utopia3.soc.duke.edu/homes/lanhome

  5. Authenticate with your Domain account userid and password.
  6. A network link to your lanhome directory is added.
