Teaching WorkshopsEach year, the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Writing (CTLW) on campus selects a number of students across the university to receive mini-grants and participate in the Preparing Future Faculty program. One of our graduate students, Alexis T. Franzese submitted an application for this program, and was selected as an awardee. Applicants are required to design a project that they will implement to enhance the teaching preparation provided to graduate students in their department. A key component of Franzese’s proposal was the development of a series of teaching workshops that are responsive to the teaching opportunities in the department and the needs of students on the job market. The workshop series will include sessions devoted to serving as a teaching assistant, teaching one’s own course, and developing a teaching portfolio. The workshops are scheduled for the spring semester. Fellowship recipients are also invited to be Fellows of the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) program, a national program that is actively organized on Duke’s campus through the CTLW. PFF fellows select a mentor at an area college with whom they meet regularly, and are involved in trips to area campuses that entail attending faculty meetings and speaking with professors about the academic life at their colleges. Franzese reports that she has found the experience very rewarding, and looks forward to conducting the workshop series this spring. Friday 3/26 9:30-11:30 AM Rm. 329: Teaching your Own
