This issue leads off with a review essay by Andrew Sharpe and Matthew Calver of the Centre for the Study of Living Standards in Ottawa, Canada that examines the contribution of health, as proxied by life expectancy at birth, to improvement in living standards in Canada. A second review essay then reviews a recent book on the new world of molecular biology and its relevance to quality-of-life research. This is followed by a Comment from Wolfgang Glatzer and then reports and announcements on conferences and a new prize – from ISQOLS President Rhonda Phillips, Giovanna Boccuzzo and Filomena Maggino, and Martijn Burger.
