Introduction
Pegasus Mail is an IMAP- and SSL-compliant, electronic mail program.
It is freeware software and is one of the primary email clients used
and supported in the Sociology Department.
These instructions guide in the download, installation and configuration
of Pegasus Mail on a home or laptop computer.
Download and Installation
- Browse to the Pegasus
Mail website (http://www.pmail.com).
- Select the downloads tab, then the North America download
site.
- Select the download button for the most current version,
4.xx release (4.12a at the time of this writing).
- When prompted to open or save the file, select open.
- A WinZip Self-Extractor window indicates that Pegasus Mail
is ready to run a setup wizard to install. Select the Setup
button.
- The Pegasus Mail Installation dialog opens. Select the Next
button.
- You are prompted for an installation directory, which defaults to
C:\PMAIL. Select this default or specify an alternative specification
such as C:\PMAIL4.12. Select the Next button.
- A set of pre-selected Other installation options appears.
These are:
- Create 'Start Menu' shortcuts for Pegasus Mail - Leave checked
- Enable Pegasus Mail for web 'mailto' links - Leave checked
if Pegasus is your default mail program
- Create a Pegasus Mail icon on the desktop - Leave checked
- Pre-configure a user mailbox - Uncheck
Select the Next button.
- A Type of installation box appears, with the default set
to not installing Novell Netware support. Accept the default and select
the Next button.
- A Ready to install box is displayed. Select the Finish
button
- Setup will complete and so indicate. Select the Exit button
in the Setup complete box. Pegasus Mail should now be in your
start menu and have a desktop icon.
Startup Configuration
- Double-click the Pegasus Mail icon. A Setting up mailboxes
dialog opens. The One person running Pegasus mail on this computer
is usually the appropriate option.
- A Setup information dialog box opens asking for specification
of where to put mail-related files [i.e.; local folders]. The default
location is C:\PMAIL\MAIL. Accept this default and click OK.
- Pegasus Mail opens in the background, with a mailbox open from which
the first message is displayed. This is NOT your Sociology
mailbox. It is a local mailbox residing on the machine and is not
typically used. In the foreground is a Pegasus Mail Internet Setup
Wizard dialog box. Select the Cancel button in this dialog,
then the OK button in the subsequent box.
Pegasus Mail is trying at this point to set up a POP mail configuration,
which is not the preferred method of mail configuration.
We will complete configuration by setting options within Pegasus,
which should be open on the desktop at this point. If not, launch
the Pmail icon.

should establish and [*] should appear to the right of the
Sociology Email entry. Your INBOX and a list of any folders
will appear on the lefthand of the Pmail window.
Click the Done button in the Manage IMAP Profiles box.
- From the pulldown menus select [Tools | Options] to open
the Pegasus Mail Preferences and Settings box.
Select Basic Settings and modify as follows:
- For Personal Name: enter your name
- Automatically open the new mail folder at startup - Unchecked
Select Copies to self ('outbox') and modify as follows:
- Click on the Select folder button
- The Select a mail folder window opens. Scroll down through
your list of folders under Sociology Email.
- If you have a folder called sent-mail, double-click it.
This selects the sent-mail folder to receive file carbon copies
and enters the name sent-mail into the box beside the Select
folder button. [Note: if you already use some other folder
for copies, select that instead.]
- If you do not have a sent-mail folder, scroll back up and single-click
on the Sociology Email entry, which will highlight it in
blue. Select the New... option at the top, left of the
Select a mail folder window. This opens the Enter name
for folder or tray dialog box. Enter sent-mail into
the name field and click OK. This creates a sent-mail folder
and adds it to the list of Sociology Email folders. Scroll down
to sent-mail. Double-click to select it and place it into the
box beside the Select Folder button.
Select Sending Mail and modify as follows:
- For Default "reply-to" address, enter your
complete email address
Select Message Reader and modify two entries as follows:
- Where choice of format exists, display the fancy version - Unchecked
- Turn attachment preview off by default in the attachment view
- Checked
Click OK to apply the settings and close the preferences and
settings box.
- The Folders window displays in a multi-panel format, with
a folder listing on the left, the folder content listing in the upper
right and message content in the lower right. We recommend that you
switch to the classic single-window mailbox view by clicking
the List icon in the Folders window toolbar. This reduces the
Folders window to just a list of folders. Folder content is displayed
in a separate window by double-clicking a folder name. Message content
is displayed in a separate window by double-clicking on a message
entry. This we believe is the safest and most deliberate method
of handling mail messages, that is least likely to result in inadvertant
opening of a virus-laden attachment.
- Finally, under the My mailbox section of your folder listing,
several folders are created in the process of setting up Pegasus Mail.
These are by in large extraneous, so you may want to delete them.
Every folder under this section except New mail may be deleted.
Pegasus mail will not allow you to delete this folder, because it
is reserved for local mail delivery under the POP protocol or for
messages that bounce back unsent, usually because of some error in
addressing.
