A map from your PC to the rest of the world
Your PC
Your office/lab PC has a copper wire that connects it to a repeater
The PCs in the lab are connected to the same copper wire which is connected to a port in the repeater
Each area of the building has PCs that are connected to a copper wire which is connected to a port in the repeater
Also connected to the repeater by copper wires are the NOVELL/PC File Server (a.k.a. SOCNET) and the UNIX Compute Servers
Our repeater is connected by a copper wire to a hub in the closet on the first floor
The hub in the closet on the first floor is connected to campus fiber optic backbone network, called DUKENET
Many other department level networks are also connected to DUKENET
DUKENET and other statewide university networks are connected to a statewide network called NCREN
NCREN is connected to other regional and commercial networks via the internet.
Although you can consider any part of the system as part of the internet.
