About Us

What is the Campus Life and Learning project?
The Campus Life and Learning project (CLL) investigates social, educational, and academic experiences for students in Duke University’s two undergraduate schools, Trinity College of Arts & Sciences and the Pratt School of Engineering.

What is the focus of the study?
This study focuses on areas of college life such as the classroom, residential life, and extracurricular activities.   We will ask you about your experiences and your perceptions of college life.

Why Duke?
Duke University is a highly-respected international academic institution. Students who are accepted to Duke are an excellent representation of undergraduate students attending elite institutions.

Who is included in the study?
You and about 1,600 students enrolling in the Duke University incoming classes of 2001 and 2002.

How was I chosen to participate?
You were chosen as part of a sample of your incoming class. Congratulations on your acceptance to Duke University and congratulations on being chosen to participate in this study.

Why should I participate?
Your participation will add to the understanding of Duke University campus life. Research knowledge gained will assist in developing campus policy and programming during your time at Duke. You will receive modest compensation for your participation.

Will my participation be confidential?
Your responses will be kept strictly confidential. You will be assigned a unique ID number and your name will not be used. Your responses will be combined with those of other students to study the larger sample rather than individuals.

What will be my part in the study?
Sometime in the next few weeks, you will receive a questionnaire on your experiences before coming to Duke that allows us to account for the different backgrounds that students bring to college. While we are principally interested in college experience, this information allows the study to assess the impact of college experience on students’ lives. Questionnaires during your time at Duke will focus on your Duke experience.

Do I have any choice about this?
Yes. Participation in this study is strictly voluntary.

Will I be able to see the results of this study?
Yes, but it may be a few years before results are available. The results will be made public in the form of summaries and statistics.

Who is conducting the study?
This study is one of several studies of universities funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation ( and is supported by Duke University. The CLL project is led by a small group of social and behavioral sciences faculty members from the Duke community.

What if I have other questions about the study?
