Sociology Major Requirements

We have just redesigned the sociology major. For students new to Duke, you
will follow the new requirements. Students matriculating before fall 2006
can choose which requirements to follow.

New Requirements (students matriculating in 2006 or later).
(Students matriculating prior to 2006 may choose to abide by
either the old or the new set of requirements.)

  • Soc 10D (Introduction to Sociology) or Soc 11 (Contemporary Social Problems)
  • Soc 132A (Research Methods)
  • Soc 132B (Quantitative Analysis of Sociological Data)
  • Soc 138D (Theory and Society)
  • and 6 electives at or above the 100-level.
  • Each student must also complete a junior/senior research experience by enrolling in a research seminar (SOC 191), participating in the Honors Program, or by selecting another sociology course in which you will complete a major research project.

Students will complete a Senior Research Intent Form for the Director of Undergraduate Studies by the end of their junior year or prior to beginning this project (whichever comes first). Soc 132A and Soc132B must be completed before beginning the research project. Course List

Old Requirements (students matriculating before fall 2006):

  • SOC 10D Introduction to Sociology
  • STATISTICS 101 Data Analysis and Statistical Inference
  • SOC 132 Methods of Social Research
  • SOC 138D History of Social Thought
  • Six other courses above 101; one of these must be a seminar or independent study in Sociology. Only one independent study course can count toward the major. Get Independent Study form here

Minors in Sociology

A minor requires five courses, four of which must be at or above the 100 level. Only one transfer credit and no Advance Placement credits may count toward the minor.
