II. NATIONAL-LEVEL CWI RESEARCH PAPERS:
Published Papers: The Land, Lamb, and Mustillo (2001) article describes in detail the basic components, structure and properties of the Child Well-Being Index. Gender differences in each of the 28 indicator series as well as within the seven domains of CWI are described in Meadows, Land, & Lamb (2005). Attention is also given to a gender-disparity version of the Index. Land (2004) was presented at the Opening Session of the Fifth Conference of the International Society for Quality-of-Life Studies in Frankfurt, Germany. It is a review of quality-of-life research and suggests areas for future studies. The Lamb, Land, Meadows, and Traylor (2005) chapter details trends in African-American child well-being as well as a comparison of these trends to overall changes in the well-being of all American children during the period of 1985 to 2001. The Hagerty and Land (2007) article specifies a model for measuring the extent to which individuals with differing importance weights for the component indicators agree on a summary well-being or quality-of-life index, and derives conditions under which an index will be endorsed by a majority of a social group. The Land, Lamb, Meadows, and Taylor (2007) and the Land, Lamb, and Zheng (2011) articles update the Land et al. (2001) article and summarizes other research on the CWI. The Fu, Land, Lamb (2013) describes findings from our analysis of trends over time in four violent bullying questions in the Monitoring the Future Study (one of the data sources for the CWI) of 8th, 10th and 12th graders. Land and Lamb (2014) is a brief encyclopedic description of the CWI. Based on what we have learned about child well-being in the U.S. from the CWI Research Project, Lamb and Land (2015) reviews cross-national studies of child well-being, including Land, Lamb, and Zheng (2011; Paper I-7). Land, Lamb, and Fu (2015) studies the relationship of child well-being indicators to indicators of child suffering both conceptually and at the level of cross-national comparisons.

III: STATE AND REGIONAL LEVEL CWI RESEARCH:
A paper by O’Hare et al. (2012/2013) develops a comprehensive composite state-level index of child well-being, modeled after the national CWI, using 25 indicators to assess state differences in child well-being among the 50 U.S. states in 2007. Three working papers sponsored by KIDS COUNT are featured here. The first, O'Hare and Lamb (2004), examines state ranking in ten indicators of child well-being from 1990 to 2000. The second, O'Hare and Bramstedt (2003), compares findings from the Kids Count index, the FCD CWI, and the annual America's Children report for the decade spanning from 1990 to 2000 in an attempt to develop a global measure of child well-being. The third, O’Hare and Lamb (2009), examines state rankings in the ten updated KIDS COUNT indicators for the years 2000-2005. A fourth paper examines state-level child and youth well-being using 25 indicators for the year 2007. The Lee, Lamb, and Land (2009) article uses the CWI methodology to study child and youth well-being in a smaller region -- the San Francisco Bay Area -- compared to the state of California. O'Hare, Mather, Dupuis, Land, Lamb, and Fu (2013) article develops a comprehensive composite state-level index of child well-being modeled after the CWI to assess state differences in child well-being among the 50 U.S. states. In addition to examining state rankings and the inter-relationship among domains across states, statistics on 27 demographic, economic, and policy characteristics of the states are analyzed in a regression analysis with respect to their ability to explain state differences in the CWIs.
