Network Scale-up Calculator

This calculator uses a network scale-up model (Killworth et. al 1998) to estimate the number of people who know somebody in an "event," such as those killed in the war on terror. Since the values needed to make these estimates are rapidly changing and somewhat subjective, users can test the effect of different assumptions with this calculator.

To use, fill in the values for t, c and e in the boxes to the left and hit "Compute".

Relevant population size.
Local network size. The average number of people in t that people know.
Number of people in the event, such as those detained or killed due to US anti-terror effort.
Results
Proportion of t that probably knows at least 1 person in e.
Number of people in t who know at least 1 person in e.
