European Union Imports

**Currently the largest importer of bananas in the world

**Has had a rise in its per capita consumption of bananas from 7 kg/yr in the 1960s to 7.2 kg/yr in 1980 and then 9.6 kg in 1990.

**Import most of their bananas from Ecuador, Colombia, and Costa Rica

**Tried to give preferential treatment to former colonies who were selling bananas, rather than countries from Latin America

As the graph shows, overall the EU has increased its banana consumption in the recent years. Ecuador, Colombia, and Costa Rica all have increased their exporting numbers, and ACP countries Cameroon and the Ivory Coast have significantly expanded their exporting to the EU. This was due to the dispute concerning tariffs on bananas that is described in the political determinants section, and not here. Not all countries have been so lucky though, as Honduras and Panama have both seen heavy decreases in their numbers in the recent years, most probably also as a result of those tariffs levied by the EU.
