"Breeding the Bananas"
*Project 1 – Field and laboratory evaluation of diploid bananas for use in breeding
Results: Increased information on diploid bananas creating greater efficency.
*Project 2 – Field cross experiments for the purpose of understanding the mechanism governing the inheritance of Black Leaf Streak resistant characters in banana
Results: With greater knowledge of the disease, 50% less spraying for it will be needed.
*Project 5 – Banana breeding in Brazil
Results: Improved banana breeding lines that were resistant to black Sigatoka.
*Project 22 – Breeding hybrid Musaceae with resistance to multiple diseases, especially black Sigatoka and Panama disease
Results: Showed that this type of variety breeding is possible.
