Composition of a cigarette

(Diagram courtesy of Brown and Williamson Tobacco)

  • Cigarettes consist of:
  • *At least 90% tobacco (in the “filler”, which is the column above the filter)
  • *Components added to aide in production (these additives “do not functionally affect the finished cigarette or the smoke inhaled by consumers” according to Phillip Morris)
  • *Flavors which account for about 1.5% of the finished weight of the cigarette (flavors give each individual brand of cigarette its unique flavor, taste and aroma)
  • *Cigarette paper, made from cellulose (may have ingredients to ensure whiteness, improve ash appearance and to help the cigarette burn uniformly
  • *Sideseam adhesive, used to secure the cigarette paper around the tobacco
  • *Monogram ink, used to add brand identifying marks to the cigarette itself, often on the filter end, or near the tipping paper of the cigarette
  • *Cigarette filters which are attached to the end of the cigarette rod to trap particles in the smoke
  • *Tipping paper and adhesive which wraps around the filter
