Additives in bottle water

Some bottle waters have large amounts of calcium and magnesium. However some do not have large amounts. Depending on where you live, it may be just as good to drink tap water.

Bottled waters which do not rid of all particles have higher mineral contents than tap waters.

Here is a comparison between tap waters in major US cities and bottled water:

Bottled water Calcium Magnesium On tap Calcium Magnesium
Apollinaris 9% 34% Chicago 4% 3%
Crystal Geyser 1% 1 Dallas 3 1
Evian 8 6 Detroit 3 2
Mendocino 38 30 Houston 4 1
San Pellegrino 20 14 Los Angeles 4 4
Volvic 1 2 San Antonio 8 4
Perrier 9 1 San Diego 9 6

Sources: FDA; city water departments; bottled water companies

Another interesting finding by analyzing this chart is that Mendocino, San Pellegrino, and Apollinaris are international brands. For European waters, the industry standard is that they contain more calcium and magnesium than US waters. The more calcium and magnesium a water has means that it will be "thicker" in taste. It is also a common taste complaint that some Americans make about Evian.

Are Evian and other premium bottled waters as good as they suggest?

An optimal water would have at leat 90 mg/L magnesium, not more than a 2:1 Ca/MG and less than 10 mg/L sodium. Only two waters meet those criteria. These waters were Adobe Springs (US) and Vicy Novelle (Finland).
