Preparation
of Manuscripts:
1. General Instructions
Submit original manuscript via email or post. If sending by email, follow
the guidelines for manuscripts listed below and include documents as
attachments. If sending by post, include two paper copies, along with
a full copy of text, tables, figures, and references on a PC computer
disk in MS Word (preferred) or in WordPerfect. An original typescript
must be included for manuscript to be considered. All material, including
footnotes and references, should be double-spaced, with generous margins.
Include a 150-word abstract on separate page following title page. Give
"Acknowledgements" on a separate page at end of text. Put
references, footnotes, tables, figure legends, and figures on separate
pages, in that order, at end of manuscript. Number all pages, including
title page. For fractional numbers, use zero before decimal point. For
percentages in text, write out words "percent."
Send manuscripts by post to our mailing address.
If sending by email, send to: biodemography@byu.edu.
2. Title page
Give exact title of article, author's name, affiliation, and complete
mailing address. For footnote to title or author, use asterisk and type
at bottom of page. Provide a second title page with title only for blind
review purposes.
3. References
Cite reference at appropriate point in text by placing author's name
and date of publication in parentheses (example: Smith, 1969; Smith
and Jones, 1962; Smith et al., 1968). List references alphabetically
on separate pages at end of text. Include author(s), publication date,
title, journal, volume, and full pages, or publisher and location (examples:
SMITH, H., J. JONES, and M. BROWN, 1972. Fertility and gender preference.
J. Amer. Biol. 18: 310-319. SMITH, H. 1974. Stature and mortality, p.
112-117, In J. Jones (ed.) Human variation. Green Bros., Chicago).
4. Text footnotes
Use footnotes only when absolutely necessary and be concise. Number
consecutively throughout body of text with superscript numerals beginning
with "1." Type footnotes in numerical order on separate page(s)
following "References."
5. Tables
Number tables consecutively, beginning with arabic numeral 1. Put tables
on separate pages after "References" and footnotes. Use no
vertical lines or boxes. Give clear complete table titles and stub and
column headings. Put "Sources" directly below table (example:
SOURCE: Smith, 1969, p. 5). Indicate table footnotes by superscript
alphabetical letters. Put footnotes at bottom of table. Authors' contributions
for setting tabular material may be requested.
6. Illustrations
Original line drawings suitable for computer reproduction must be provided
by the author. Identify figures with author name and figure number on
the back. Type figure legends on a separate page.
7. Copyright
A copyright release should be obtained for any quoted matter longer
than ten printed lines and for previously published tables and figures.
8. Proofs
Proofs will be sent to author for corrections. Please be certain you
submit your manuscript in final form. Authors will be charged for any
alterations (not for corrections of printer's errors) at a rate of $3.00
per line of text affected, when alteration is feasible.
